                    Chavez joins Community Service Organization

1959                     AFL-CIO moves into agriculture with its Agricultural Workers Organizing Committee (AWOC)

                     Lettuce grower Bud Antle signs contract with Teamsters

1962
                     Chavez quits work at the CSO and begins organizing a new union, the National Farm Workers          Association (NFWA)

     First NFWA convention

1964                     Congress refuses to renew Public Law 78, thus ending the bracero program

Sept. 8, 1965       AWOC calls grape strike in Delano, CA

Sept. 20, 1965     NFWA joins AWOC strike

Dec. 16, 1965      Walter Reuther joins strikers

March 1966         NFWA and AWOC march from Delano to Sacramento

April 6, 1966       Grape grower Schenley Industries recognizes NFWA
